The beginning in Devils Arithmetic takes place in modern times; the author has an interesting way of going back in time. There is a very strong emphasis on Jewish Tradition. If you do not understand it, please keep reading because we will discuss it in class and as a group. Here is a reference site to help you if you want it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_holiday
The beginning of the book begins at the Seder meal, which is a traditional meal Jewish families have before Passover. Families gather and read scripture and follow strict religious tradition. Some Christian religions celebrate the Seder meal as well. It celebrates the Jews being freed from the Egyptians. Have you ever seen "The Ten Commandments?"
You have read Chapters 1-2. Devils Arithmetic is a book about a typical teenager who just wants to be normal. She and her friends go to a private Jewish school. Hannah does not want to hear about the past. She is living in the present. Have you ever been frustrated hearing stories of the past that does not directly involve you? The author is giving you hints at what will happen next.
